Our Madresas
There was a news in The Indian Express:
Three boys chained in Madresa. Father and Teacher held. The news is from Bengluru. Police informed that the boys were not interested in studies and would play truant at the smallest opportunity. The efforts of the father to make the children sit in class always ended up being futile.
He sought the help of the teacher and they decided to tie up the boys in the Madresa to scare them into attending class..
The teacher and the father have been booked under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act , 2015.
The problem of the educational system in Madresas was nicely put by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in his address on 22 February 1947.
The speech is in chaste Urdu . I will try to say in English what he said.
Azad said this education is not fit for the modern times because it reflects the decline of the Muslims. In the last 500 years the time has moved very fast but you were sitting in the Madresa which were established according to the needs of that time.
The earlier system was producing best of minds, great administrators and thinkers . It now produces incompetent 'Nikamme' people. They work in mosques and depend on charity. He said that the Muslims never tried to make the Madresa compatible with the need of times. The time was moving and reached much ahead but there was stagnation and frigidity in that system. The time has decided that you are useless and worthless. The product of the Madresa have no value in our society
Iqbal said,
Utha main Madresa va Khanqah se ghamnak
Na Zindagi, na muhabbat, na Marfat na nigah.
It is a fact that there is no stirring of life, no love, no understanding, no vision, in the Madresa.
Sir Syed understood the problem and so tried to establish the educational system on the pattern of Oxford and Cambridge.
The product of Madresa becomes the Imam of a village mosques and teaches all the rubbish he has learnt in about 10 years in his Madresa.
It is my personal observation that he tries to divide Muslims on sectarian lines.
Perhaps he has been told in his Madresa not to broaden his outlook by reading all sorts of books by different writers. He will generally not quote from the Quran, but from some suspected Hadith or incidents from the lives of Sufis ,to prove his narrow and parochial understanding of the issues.
He does not know basic math, basic geography or English, or science .
He is useless for the modern times .He is totally ignorant of the challenges and issues being raised in the present time He is incapable of explaining the issues of gender, abortion, transgender etc in a scientific manner.
Yesterday I met a person , who was educated in a Madresa for 10 years. He could not talk on the problem of Sufi and Salafis. He could not say any thing about Imam ibn Taiyimiya. These people cannot read good newspaper, they don't watch television: how they will know what is happening in the world.
Sheikh Mohammad Abduh wanted overhauling of Madresa : he could not succeed.
If it is not done Muslims will never compete with other communities.
We will have to think whether the factories to produce Hafize Quran are wanted. Knowledge of the Quran does not come by memorising it.
We will have to think how to make our mosques , spread in each Muslim village, useful and purposeful.
